Getting A Dog? What To Consider When Fencing Off Your Property

by Connor Hanson

Are you going to be adding a dog to your family? If so will likely be fencing off your yard so that they can run safely without your constant supervision. Chain-link fencing is a great way to accomplish this task in a way that is practical and affordable. Here are some things to consider when getting a chain-link fence.

Fencing Material Length

You do not have to fence off your entire backyard if you have a dog, especially if you have a very large plot of land that your house is on. Some people decide to fence off a small portion of their yard that is attached to their house, so they can easily let their dog out through the back door for late night bathroom breaks and for letting them run while making dinner after work.

If you are on a budget and want to limit how much fencing material you use, consider using existing structures on your property. For example, you can have a dog run along the side of your house, which will utilize the existing structure in place of a long length of fencing material. If you have a garage or shed, you can build the dog run around that structure as well in a similar manner. Building a dog run against a structure can also help provide shade during parts of the day when it is blocking the sun, so you won't have to worry about your dog being in the heat.

Fencing Security

You know your dog's temperament better than anybody, and you have an idea about how they will try to escape the fenced off area. If they are the kind of dog that jumps really high, you'll want to extend the height of the fence to make it difficult. If they are the kind of dog that loves to dig, you may want to find methods that prevent them from digging under the material. You can install a thin strip of concrete underneath the bottom edge of the fence, which will make it impossible for the dog to dig underneath the fence if left unsupervised.

Fencing Aesthetics

A chain link fence doesn't need to be bare material. You can make it look nicer by improving its aesthetics in several ways. For instance, you may want to use fencing slats to add privacy to stop the dog from barking at other people, which will also add color to the material. You can also use the fencing to grow vines that weave through the material, which add color in a pleasant way.
